Fighting Pomeranians

Question
Dear Carrie:

We have several pomeranians and we have been at this loving and breeding pomeranians for many years--however we have a problem for which we are searching for a good answer before we do anything.  Two of our males, a father and son, have taken to fighting (which started over a female in heat). We have to keep them separate out of fear that they will seriously damage each other, because they have both mildly injured each other, and have drawn blood.  All it takes is one eye to eye glance and they are upon each other with a vengeance! The father is my best breeding male, (76 puppies to date! And more on the way...) and the son belongs to my daughter.  We alternate keeping them in separate rooms, and we take turns letting them roam the house with the other poms.
How can we get them to be friends again? They used to play together. I believe that we might be able to slowly oreint them to each other by holding them in the same room and gently forbidding the growling and aggressive behavior until they stop--but I am afraid that they will pick it up again when they are let loose in the house together. I don't want to have to be constantly on guard against these two killing each other.
One further question, the breeding male I am referring to is growling and biting my husband when he tries to get in the bed at night.  This used to be cute, but two days ago he drew a serious amount of blood from my husband.  We hate to break his spirit--but this behavior is baaadd!

Thank You,
Cecilia

Answer
Hi Cecilia,

These dogs are never going to get along unless you have them neutered.  They will continue to fight for the females and exhibit other agressive behaviors associated with intact males.  Most likely, they are marking their territory with urine (your house).

The male that is growling and biting your husband sees himself above your husband in pack order. Do not allow the dog to sleep on the bed anymore.  Higher physically means higher socially to a dog.  If you do not get this dog in the position of being at the bottom of the pack with regards to family members his behavior will get much worse.
