Barking Pom!

Question
Is there a way to stop my little pom from incessantly barking at strangers when they come over to visit?  Its impossible to hold a conversation with someone when in my truck with the dog also.  Also, one more thing, do most poms have the tendency to run off when not on a leash, and act like they dont hear you?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Brad,

There are two methods I like to use, treats for quiet and social isolation for barking.  If the dog won't stop barking when someone comes over (after two or three barks) warn him with, "If you don't stop barking, your going in the bedroom".  If he doesn't stop--put him in the bedroom (or whatever room you choose) and shut the door.  Leave him in there for about a minute. Then offer to let him out if he'll be quiet.  If he won't be quiet put him back in there again for another minute or so.  Dogs hate to be socially isolated from their pack so this method usually works.  It works on my pom!  He can't stand it if I am in the next room and he can't be with me. The treat method works good too.  You really have to be persistant to change this type of habit.  Some poms love to bark.

My pom never runs off when off leash--he stays right by me, but if he gets to smelling something especially interesting he may not respond immediately.  Have you ever taken your pom to a dog obedience class?  I think it would help you a lot.  I took my pom when he was a puppy.  I have to brag though, he was by far (at the age of five months) the most obedient pupy in the class.  I worked with him a lot.  It really pays to take the time to train your dog.  They bond with you better, learn to read you better, you learn to read them better, and they are much more enjoyable to be around.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best Regards,
Carrie
