Question
I am the proud owner of my 2nd Pom.  My first Pom was my dear companion for 18 years! You might say we grew up together.  After her death a friend gave me a cat and we became buds, 16 years later two weeks before Tigger went to Kitty heaven, Abby showed up at my door.  She is an exact replica of my late Panda. We made every attempt to find her owners but no one claimed her.  I consider her a a Godsend!  My own Angel!

My question is, the vet suggested I shave or cut short her coat this summer.  Abby seems to be about 3 years old and we gave her vaccinations, however she had been neutered.  Do you think every other year for vaccinations are OK?  I have never heard of shaving a Pom and question this also!  She is no trouble to groom but if she would be more comfortable cut short we would consider the Snuggle Bear look!

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Vets over vaccinate pets in our country.  The vacines the vet gives will last for at least 3 years once the initial sets are given.  I would do the round of 3 with this dog since you do not know its vaccination history.  You should, however, give monthly treatments for fleas and worm 3 times a year or when the flea treatments lapse.
As far as the grooming-that is a personal choice.  The double coat insulates the Pom from the elements.  I enjoy brushing my Poms and most of my Poms enjoy being brushed.  My 2 older ones have become more sensitive, "smelly" and crochety so I shave them down for their comfort and for me becuase then they are cleaner.  I have also shaved down my bitches who have whelped as they will lose their coats and the hair gets everywhere.  Mostly it is just a personal preference.  You can do what you like.  If she hasn't been shaved she doesn't know if she likes it better.  The shaving process can be stressful for a Pom the first few times and if you like to brush her out it can be a close time for you two. :)

There is tons of info on my links page about all things Pom.
