Question
I have a 4 1/2 month old female parti pom. When I first got her in December everyone would always stop and say what a beautiful pom, now I get asked what kind of dog is that. I even had another lady on my sons baseball team who has an adult male pom tell me she did not think that she was a pom. I have researched pictures and her face and personality seems to match with pom. About 2 weeks ago I noticed she was shedding terrible and while brushing her I had to clean out the brush 3 times. She still has hair but it is now laying flat and no long hair on legs (her legs have completely flat hair)as does her tail.  I took her to my vet and he said she is fine, no skin conditions or fleas, I went to Petco and they told me I probably brushed her undercoat out because I was using a Slicker brush.  Now my husband is worried that he got scammed and bought a mix. He keeps saying she looks like a Pom Chi (pom Chiuaha mix). She is actually getting the poofiness back around her ears but that is it. Will her coat grow back and her tail get bushy again? Could I have brushed her undercoat out?  I love ISabella to death and is truly my 3rd child but I just would like to know so that when asked if I say she is a  pom I don't look crazy.

Answer
The stage your pup is in is called the "puppy uglies" or the "monkey's" because they look horrible or becuase they look a bit like a monkey with the SHORT hair on the face and then a poof around the head and then short coat on the body.
It happens to almost all pups at that age and it is the puppy shed.  The adult coat will start coming in in full force over the next few months and just when it seems big and pretty, it will start falling out about 1 yr of age-the one year shed.  If you keep her intact (unspayed) she will shed with each heat cycle but if you get her fixed then she should have a full lovely coat by the age of 18-24 months and then will shed minimally with the change of seasons.
Depending on her parents and lineage and your location in the country will determine the size of coat she will eventually grow.
