Pomerainians and allergies

Question
I am very allergic to dogs, cats, horses, etc...and have had poodles and a yorkie in the past, non shedding dogs, that I am not so allergic to....the pomerainians looks to be shedding dogs and I am afraid I may be allergic to them...do you have any knowledge of them being not suited for folks like myself?

Answer
Hi Michelle,

If you are thinking about getting a dog and you are very allergic to them but you know you can be around poodles and yorkies why don't you get one of them?

There are two types of pom coats:  soft undercoat, harsh outercoat (puffball), and long soft flat coat.  The long soft flat coat sheds a lot.  My pom has the other type and hardly sheds at all.  (I got him from a show breeder.) It's not just the shedding that causes problems.  You will probably have less allergy problems with smaller breeds that hardly shed and are bathed at least once a month.  Note that I said probably.  I think you would be better off getting a dog you know won't cause you much of a problem, unless you know someone with a pom and you could spend some time with it to see how you react.

Allergies can be a real drag.  Wish I could help you more!
Best Regards,
Carrie
