Allergies to Poms

Question
I am going to be staying with some relatives for a while and one of my cousins has an allergy to dogs. My mom says its mostly from dog dander.I was wondering if it is better to keep my poms hair long for this time being or have her shaved down(which we do once a year since it gets so hot here in HI)? I don't think she has dander like other dogs, considering she never scratches, NEVER smells, and never has any dirt or gunk of any sort in her ears. Its almost like shes not a dog at all. What do you suggest?

Answer
Hi Jay,

How bad is his allergy?  I have a sister who is allergic and she just gets a little bit of a runny nose when around dogs, (she has never been around mine though.)  And I have a cousin who is so allergic to cats that when they tried to keep one he started having serious breathing problems and they had to find it a new home.

I don't think it would be a problem with a pom.  You could keep the hair long or short, but I would suggest that if you get it cut keep it a least 1/2 inch long.  She needs some coat to protect her skin from the sun and heat.  Bath your pom about once a week or so while you are staying with your relatives.  I bathe my pom once a month and he is just like yours--he doesn't have a "doggie smell", he is very clean and he doesn't even shed.

Best Regards,
Carrie
