pomeranian shedding

Question
I have a six month old female pomeranian who has shed most of her fluffy baby coat, is this normal and how long will it take for her fur to grow back? She looks pretty staggly at this stage. Should she be trimmed down to ensure full new growth?

Answer
Yes, this is perfectly normal.  Most Poms will lose the downy puppy coat that they have just grown into at about 4-8 months and then start to regrow it as soon as it is gone.  Some don't lose the puppy coat will "roll it over" right into the adult coat.  You can tell the adult coat is coming in by all the coarser gaurd hairs poking through the little bit of fluff that is left.  No trimming is necessary but it woun't hurt anything either.  Then they go through another "blow" at about 1 year.  If she is left intact (unspayed) she will "blow her coat" every time she comes into heat.  The loss of puppy coat in Poms is reffered to as "the uglies".  And it ends at about 12-15 months.  Then they will go through seasonal "blows" if she is not spayed and also through the summer "blow" as it warms up.  Brush her often (a few times a week) to keep the hair around the house to a minumum and to promote a healthy new coat and because it feels good to her. :-)
Good luck with her and enjoy her!  You can check out my links page for tips on grooming at www.geminipoms.com
