Question
I have a lady who wants a puppy cut for her pom for the summer. What blade or cut length would you recommend? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Amy,

They may stay cooler with less hair, but I do not recommend giving a pom a haircut because it may take a VERY long time to grow back. This is referred to as post-clipping alopecia. It is common in nordic breeds, especially males. A pom should never be shaved. Their coat gives them protection from the elements. If she still want to cut the hair do not cut it any shorter that 1/2 inch.

Here's a few ideas to keep the pom cool:
1) get her wet
2) get her a cool bed/mat to lay on such as: Drsfostersmith.com (Body Cooler Pet Mat)
walgreens.com or easysource.com (canine cooler pet bed)
3) try a thermo cooling bandana or collar
carealotpets.com or dogcooler.coolerbars.com
4) body cooling accessories
