Pomeranian hair loss

19 17:13:21

Question
I have 5 pomeranians ranging from 4 months to four years old!
Elvis is a two years old un neuterd male. He started experiencing hair loss about nine months ago all over his body.
Our vet took a blood panel and said everything was fine but mentioned if we neutered him, that might help the situation. I cannot remember the technical reasons why!
He is a very cute AKC dog but we have no idea why this is happening.
Please e-mail or call me at 949 661 2770 with any suggestions you may have!
Thank you so much for lookong at this problem

Best regards

Pamela

Answer
Nordic breeds which includes the Pomeranian have a problem
called Black Skin Disease which is prevalent in certain bloodlines.  If your Pom does not have allergies or the dandruff mite then he would be considered to have BSD.

One of thoughts behind this disease is to be considered hormonal so the idea the vet has of neutering him would
be one of the normal treatments.

I would definetly have skin scrapings to rule out mites and
I would also put him a dog food than helps dogs with allergies.
