Plugged nostril??

Question
Pam is an 8 yr old Pom. She does the reverse sneezing which I understand is not unusual for poms.
Previous (3 times).. She has eaten grass and it becomes lodged in her nose.
I rushed her to the vet the first time because she was sneezing blood.  The upshot of that trip was I noticed grass sticking out of her nose the next day, which I removed.
Now she has a mucousy sound and a strange cough.
I took her to her vet and he declared sinus problems as well as a need to remove 3 teeth.
She still has the original problem.
Mucous is sneezed from the left nostril.  She has the most trouble when she bends down to eat. She has to stop and cough a while..
The vet said he looked into my theory when she was on anesthetised.. what to do?

Answer
Hi Barbara,

Has your pom always eaten grass or has she recently started this?  Has she had vacinations, heartworm medication, or frontline put on her lately?  The reason I ask is because sometimes dogs react negatively to these medications.  The last time I gave my pom heartworm, about a week afterwards he started eating grass a lot and then vomiting.  He did this for a week or so.  I will never give him heartworm preventive again, nor do I believe in yearly booster shots. Dogs don't need heartworm medication if they are tested yearly for heartworm and if they live indoors.

I am very sorry your pom is having health problems. Unfortunely, I don't know very much about medical conditions.  I would call your vet and tell them that your dog is still having problems.  If he just tells you it' a sinus problem and there's nothing he can do--call another vet.  Maybe the problem is with her trachea.  In any event, it sounds like you pom is suffering and I would try and find a vet who can help.

By the way, what kind of dog food do you feed her?  Maybe it's her food.

Keep me posted.
Best Regards,
Carrie
