poms and other family dogs

Question
We just lost our mini American Eskimo.  We want to get a Pom, but we also have another dog, a shepherd/malmute mix.  She and the Mini American Eskimo played together a lot and chased each other around the yard.  We are concerned about the Pom being accidently hurt.  The shep/malmute mix is a much larger (though very lovable) dog.
Also, we are sure we would want the Pom in our laps and maybe even in the car.  The larger dog sheds to much to ride in the car and we are concerned we would hurt its feelings by taking one and leaving the other behind.
What are your thoughts on these two questions.
Thank you so much for your time.
Dennis

Answer
Hi Dennis,

I am sorry about the loss of your dog.  You are right, because a pom is so small it could be seriously hurt by a well-meaning, but much larger dog.  A 3-7 pound pom won't be able to play with your dog like a larger dog could either.  You could get a pom but I think it would be a hassel for you and I believe your dog and you would be happier with something a little bigger.

It would be very difficult to take one dog while leaving the other.  Could you brush her before going somewhere and put a blanket down for her in the car?  Of course, a small dog can go more places with you and often it's too hot to leave them in the car.  (Because my pom is so small I never leave him in the car alone.)

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best Regards,
Carrie
