Pom chewing on the furniture

Question
I have a 1.5 year old Pom. He is potty trained and behaves great when we are around. Recently, my wife and I started working full time and leaving him out during the day. I come home for lunch to play with him and let him out. When we are not there, he will pee in the house and sometimes chew on the cushions of the furniture. When we are at home, he will tell us that he has to pee about every 3 or 4 hours, but when alone, he pees more. He knows it is wrong, because everytime I come home and go near that spot, he runs and hides. I get on to him and spank him, even sometimes put him in his kennel, but he will do it over and over again. Is there a way to get him to stop this?

Answer
First of all he is tramatized about no one being home for him.  Start by keeping him in an exercise pen or get a doggy door to put over the entrance of your utility room or bath room...somewhere you can keep him during the day.

Start over by turning him loose when you are home and watching him and taking him out.

just give him time and patience and he will come back around.
