Question
I am home 95% of the time. I was disabled in a car accident, so I do college from home. I cant work. I will be the one with the baby most of the time. If/when I have children I will be there supervising everything. I wont be living here (my parents house where the child will be) too much into the child's life, so I dont see this one being a problem. I have thought about the future, and have made the reccomended changes, and thoughts. The bredder I found, I contacted refrences, saw pictures of their dogs, stuff like that.

Thank you,
Kim

Hey! Its me agian. My pom puppy is due in just a few days. I am so excited, but then I run into a problem. My sister announced yesterday that she is pregnant. My problem is she is Due at the end of July, and my puppy will be home just weeks before that. I know that poms are good with kids, but I will not live here with the baby forever and the baby wont be able to do anything with the dog because its going to be a newborn not a todler. Should I let this stop me, or should I just take more care and make sure that the baby dont pick on it and could this help me in the future when I have children? I dont want to put the puppy or the baby at risk. I dont think it will be a problem, I just want a professional opinion. THank you

Hi Kim,

Poms are not good with young children.  The reason poms and young children don't mix well is because young children cannot understand the concept that small dogs can be seriously hurt or even killed if something was dropped on it or if a child fell on it, etc.  If you have a pom and young children they must always be supervised when together to protect both the dog and child, because a pom (and most small dogs) will become snappy and bite to protect themselves.

How long are you staying with your sister?  Also, if you plan on having children in the future you may want to ask yourself if you mind constantly watching over your dog to make sure it doesn't get hurt.  When I got my pom, I was even a little concerned about myself accidently stepping on him.  Toy dogs are wonderful and I highly recommend them as companion animals but you really need to understand what you are getting into.  Are you home a lot?  Poms want and need to be with you. They also need lots of supervision outside to protect them from other dogs, large birds, etc.  Also, poms live about 15 years.  Do you have lots of time to be with the dog and don't mind that fact that he will need lots of supervision? You may want to think it through, before you make such a life-changing decision.

One more thing, I strongly recommend that if you get a pom, you get one from a very reputable breeder.  Poms are a dime a dozen and there are many breeders producing unhealthy dogs with hyper and/or aggressive temperments that barely resemble the breed.

I hope I have helped you decide.  Let me know if you need anything else.

Best Regards,
Carrie

Answer
Hello again Kim,

I am sorry about the car accident. I hope you are not in pain and I am praying for you. :)

Since you don't mind the fact that you will need to supervise the dog quite a bit, I think you will be very happy with a pom.  I love my pom so much!  Even though it is extra work watching him so closely he is well worth it to me.

I hope you'll write and tell me all about your new puppy!

Best to you,
Carrie
