Question
Hi.
My husband and I are adopting a 6 month female bulldog who has been home raised by a vet technician since birth (the dog is having cleft palate surgery at the end of Jan.)  The Bullie currently lives/plays with a few other dogs and is still "bity" when we see her.  We read much of your advice on training biting out of younger pups...would those strategies work for our 6 month old?

Answer
If she has been spending a lot of time with other dogs and not so much with humans, this is pack behavior. This is the type of interaction that she knows.  It's up to you to teach her acceptable behavior with humans.

This should have been done early on, however, it's not too late.  I'm going to tell you how to make this work but you have to promise not to think I'm crazy.

When she bites you, bite her back.  Take her paw, bite her toe hard enough to make an impression, growl at her and walk away.  Do this as many times as it takes, and it won't be long before the biting stops.  YOU have to be the BIG dog.
