cat/kitten introductions

Question
Hi there,
I have had cats for many years. A few months ago, my 14 year old Ollie passed away. I have a 10 year old named Baloo. Ollie raised him from 12 weeks of age, and he was very lonely after Ollie died. Three weeks ago, I adopted a kitten who is now almost 9 weeks old. I did the intro process "by the book".. keeping the new kitten in a guest room with all his own things, allowing the older cat to smell him under the door, doing the scent transfer, everything! My older cat is very territorial. He rubs his face on everything all the time- he always has!
So if I would have waited for him to stop hissing at the new kitten under the door, I would never get to introduce them! I recently began letting the new kitten explore the house when I get home from work. My older cat hisses at him, and if the kitten persists, he swats him a few times before walking away mumbling and complaining.
When I return the kitten to his room, my resident cat continues to complain, and has begun to go under my bed for short periods of time even when the kitten is in his own room.
I am trying to make it an easy process, but Baloo doesn't seem to be interested in getting along with this newcomer! I may need some fresh advice.
Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Jodi!
If Baloo doesn't try to hurt the kitten,I would leave them out together.  You have already done the introduction part, now let them get to know each other.  It's really just a matter of time.  Yes, there will be hissing and growling, some swatting, but if he doesn't hurt the little one, then let them get to know each other. Once Baloo gets used to the idea, they will be best of friends. I have introduced several new cats into my household and I have never had a situation that didn't work out. It just takes a little time and patience.

God Bless,
Becky
