Question
Hiya, good morning. I have 12 cats, all kept indoors, and not quite half of them are beginning to get these "clumps" on their hind quarters. It appears to be tangles in their fur. They are not in pain from it, and I have tried brushing out these "tangles," but to no avail. Obviously it is contagious, since 5 of my 12 cats now have it. Since they do not go outside, I really can't imagine where they got this condition from. The cats "infected" are both male and female, and all are fixed. I cannot take them to a doctor because I am housebound with a disorder (my husband took them to doctors for fixing over the years, but he has since passed on). My cats have a healthy diet, although they are a bit overweight, all eat well, bowels are working normally, and they range in age from 5 to 12 years old. I've always heard of a "mangey" dog or cat, and I'm wondering if this condition is that. In my over 40 years of living with cats, I have never seen anything like this. Any suggestions or information you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
if they are short haired cats, then they are just not good at cleaning themselves. If they are long haired, you are not brushing them enough.

cats with mange suffer from hair loss, scabby skin and severe itching.

you need to contact your veterinarian via phone and have someone come out to YOU to see the cats.
