Broken Jaw

Question
We just returned from the vet after picking up a puppy that was attacked by another dog. The pup has a broken jaw that has been wired shut. The attack happened about 48 hours ago and she recieved immediate care. Now that she is home the problem is feeding her. She is 7 weeks old and they did give us a syringe to feed her, but every time you get near her mouth she starts wiggling and screaming so you can't put anything in her mouth and if you get any in she is just spitting it back out. This also means that she isn't going to be able to swallow her pain medication and antibiotic. She is still very swollen and sore. We really want to save her. Any ideas? Thank you!

Answer
You need to call your vet and take her back in for treatment.  I would suggest that they give her some SQ fluids to make sure she stays hydrated.  Also they can give her injectable pain medication as well as antibiotics until the swelling goes down and she is more comfortable.  To go home, ask them if they can apply a Fentanyl patch to her which will provide continuous pain relief for 3-4 days.
