Question
I took my male cat to our vet yesterday and he was diagnosed with FLUTD.  Crystals were present, but no bacteria. He was given an antibiotic. We now have him on moist food, but I am having a very hard time getting him to drink water.  He has never drank a lot of water, but I know he needs it.  Today, I have tried everything, even boiled fish and gave him the juice.  He drank a small amount, but I am at a loss of what to do.  Do we try to force water down him?  Please help, I don't want to lose him.

Answer
Sherry,

Trying to get a cat to do what you want him to do without his consent is darn near impossible.

The good news is that one of the reasons we recommend moist food is to increase their water intake.  Canned and moist food gives them a lot of water in and of itself.  They honestly dont need much more than that.  After that, the best you can do it keep fresh water out for him at all times.  There are pet water fountains available that some cats will love (especially if they are "sink drinkers").  I personally use the DrinkWell fountain for both my dogs and cats.

You can try giving him water from canned tuna and chicken broth (salt free) but, ultimately, if he doesnt want to drink he wont.  Forcing him will only frustrate both of you.  Yes, drinking more will help his FLUTD but only if he decides to cooperate.

Good luck to both of you.
