back legs in a yellow lab

Question
Hi. I just wanted to ask a question about our 7 month old lab. His back legs cross when he walks and he sometimes refuses to jump. Is this normal and what should I do to find if there is something wrong? Thanks

Answer
No, this is not normal. You need to get him into a vet's and have his hips xrayed. While he is a bit young to really know what is going on with them permanently, an xray now can show the vet what kind of shape they are in now and where they might be headed.

Find out if his parents were OFA certified also and what their rating was. OFA is the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. Any one who breeds dogs should get their dogs OFA certified and especially breeders of labs and shepherds.

I hope this turns out to be a minor thing but you need to have it looked into now. Let me know what you find out.
