White Shepherd with severe skin disorder

Question
Hi!
My boyfriend has a 6-year-old white shepherd called Kane.  Kane has an incredibly bad skin disorder (vet didn't deign to tell us what) and chews and licks to the point of bleeding, especially his tail, paws, and flanks.  Chris has tried everything, including cortizone shots recommended by his vet, and the cortizone works but not for very long.  We're wondering if changing his diet might help?  Currently he's on something called Nutrl (Lamb and Rice).  Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Erin

Answer
I would recommend a fish-based diet such as those made by Verus, Wellness or Flint River Ranch.  You should avoid all treats and bones--just give veggies for treats.

I would also recommend having his thyroid checked and consider allergy testing.  ATOPICA may work for him.

Cortisone is not good to give on a regular basis due to potential liver problems and diabetes.

I would supplement his diet with fatty acids (omega 3) as well as Ester C 5-10 mg per pound twice a day.  You can also try giving Benadryl at a dose of 1 mg per pound three times a day to help the itching.
