Dog having eye twitching problems

Question
Just wanted to get a opinion before I have to spend thousands of dollars in
testing. My dog recently got hit by a car about a few months ago and I took
her to the vet hospital and they said she seemed fine with all the test. But
every once and awhile she'll start to climb the couch lose her balance and
start to fall off, her eyes will start twitching back and forth. It only happens
for a minute or two. I know I have to take her to the vet but just wondering if
you can tell me anything before I spend lots of money on testing. I'm really
worried about her. Thanks!

Answer
Eye twitching back and forth like this is called nystagmus and it is caused (usually) by some sort of head trauma, such as a concussion.

She could also have some vestibular issues going on, which is the balance mechanism in the inner ear. So she would get dizzy and then she she falls, her eyes start twitching due to the head injury.

I would not say your dog is 'alright' from the first visit. While you didn't mention which tests were run, I would certainly take her back and have an ultrasound or at least an xray of her skull done to see if there are any fractures.

In either case, she needs to see a vet for this. There might be nothing they can do at this point but you won't know until you get her in there.

I hope she can get past this. Please let me know what the vet finds.
