young dog possible infection

Question
My Roommate has this dog, we think he is 2 or 3, and he has been peeing while excited. he has had some white discharge that is sometimes greenish white. My roommate thinks it is nothing, but I am worried. He cannot control his urine and he constantly licks his penis, mostly when there has been some discharge or if he just leaked urine. My roommate walks him twice a day, once sometime before twelve and once late at night. His penis is a dark red color when he's excited, I thought a dogs penis is a light pink color. I guess my question is should he take a trip to the veterinarian? Or am i worried about nothing?

Answer
Your roommates dog is pretty normal sounding.

Sometimes the discharge in the sheath will get out of hand and if it is too green then he needs to see the vet. They do get infections in there. The dark color is also normal when a dog is excited as the penis is filled with blood.

Licking is normal as well but overlicking can cause irritation and if it's already irritated then he needs to have it looked at. If this dog isn't neutered already then he needs to do that as well.

He is controlling his urine, but if he is intact, not neutered, then that is usually the issue.

So call and make an appointment to have him fixed and have his sheath looked at.
