Question
hi, i have a dogo argentino, i got him when he was around 2 yrs old, hes well behaved, and a happy acting dog. When i got him he was healthy and at a good weight(between 80 and 90 pounds)but within the first few months that i had him he started to lose weight and got rather skinny and i tried worming him and he still stayed skinny, ive read an article on the web about dogos having stress related health problems, such as losing weight, when they join a new family, and i was wondering if this could be the problem, or if you think it could be something else. I make sure he has plenty of food and water and i feed him as much as i feed my pit bull and shes healthy as can be, so im not sure whats wrong with him. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. thanks

Answer
OK I am a bit confused as to how long you have had this dog now.
I understand how old he was when you got him, but not how long you have had him.

The reason I ask is because dogs don't lose that much weight from living with a new family. You didn't say how much he has lost, nor whether or not he is neutered.

When other dogs are in heat and he isn't neutered, that will cause weight loss in an intact male.
Poor quality food, not quantity is another reason they will lose weight. What are you feeding him?
Stress can be a factor but not after months and months.

Worming a dog certainly helps, but what kind of worming did you do?
If you wormed him with over the counter wormer and he has tapeworms, that won't help and he still has worms. Tapeworms will make them thin.

Not getting any attention, being chained or kenneled all the time, being out of reach to the family- these are the kinds of stresses that will cause weight loss.

If he appears healthy in other ways, such as being bright and alert and playful, then I would look at his diet and get him neutered if he isn't.

Make sure he is heartworm free and on prevention also as that can cause weight loss initially until the liver fails then they gain fluid weight.

That is about all I can give you without more information.
