black spots and scabs

Question
My 14 yr old yorkie has a skin condition the vet diagnosed as food allergies, but she said it is a guess. Biopsy report is Erythema Multiflora. There are black pigmentation like round spots, which apparently than turn to round scabs that than fall off with NOTHING underneath. NO ITCHING. Cyclosporine or prednisone is her suggestion. I hesitate using these without really knowing what the problem is. He seems fine..great appetite (I did change his food), happy little fellow...but these scabs are all over. Have searched the web for pix, but none like this. The only pic I have is very small, but will send anyway. Hope you can help us!

Answer
Erythema multiforme is a reaction of the skin to something.  It could be allergies or it could be something in the food.  Try and change the food to something for allergies, like Hill's z/d for 6 weeks to see if it is the food.  Low dose prednisone or cyclosporine will not be harmful if the kidneys are functioning normally.
