Stomach Noises & Chocolate

Question
Hi. I have a 7-year old Chihuahua mix and today her stomach has been making loud gurgling or farting noises. She can't seem to stay laying down for more than a half an hour or so. She sits up and stares at me, then whines in my face. I don't think it's gas, because it doesn't smell. She hasn't had diarrhea or has been eating any less than normal as far as I know, and she hasn't eaten anything differently recently except for a small plate of scrambled eggs. Is this normal for this to happen?

My dog has gotten to chocolate NUMEROUS times, and it's really worried me ever since the first time. Big chocolate gift baskets, 12 inch chocolate bars, Halloween candy, baked goods, chocolate poptarts, Easter chocolate...I know that the main problems they cause are kidney problems and seizures. We never really took her to the vet right after she's eaten chocolate, and her last and maybe second checkup was last year. The vet said she was perfectly healthy. And after she's eaten chocolate, she's never gotten a seizure. Only threw-up a lot one of the times. Should I be looking for future health problems? Will there be any? How can I prevent them?

Answer
The digestive problems could be just temporary, perhaps an upset from the eggs or her getting into something else unknown.  It is also possible for adult dogs to develop food allergies that can manifest themselves in different ways.  If this continues you might try a different food, looking for something she has not eaten before such as lamb and rice or veal and potato.  There are several commercially marketed diets for such reasons.

In regards to chocolate the most dangerous period is shortly after they eat it.  Consuming too much can lead to vomiting as you have seen, increased heart rate, agitation and if enough is consumed death.  There should not be long lasting side effects to worry about presently, but I would definitely suggest careful guarding of an chocolate in the future since she has a history of loving to indulge herself in it.

Best of luck to you and your canine companion.
