Dog having anal gland problem

Question
I lost my job 2 days ago and do not have the money to take my dog to the vet. He is a 5yr old Australian shepard mix. Monday he started scooting and these past few days he's not eating, but will drink water. I can tell he is not comfortable and he is constantly attempting to lick the area. It is somewhat raw and looks swollen. Do you think think I could suppress his anal glands and what is the best way to do it? Thank you Victoria in St Louis

Answer
I am sorry about your job Victoria. Things are really tough all over. I cannot tell you how to express them here since it is nearly impossible to tell someone- you have to be shown.

If I were you I would call a groomer in your area and ask them if they charge to do them and/or if they can just show you how.
They do get raw from the scooting around on the area. Now be warned that they also can get an anal gland impaction and/or infections.
So if they are really swollen or have a runny or green/yellow appearance, then they are infected.

Just a heads up on that. Most groomers that I know here are kind enough to show someone how to do this stinky job. They normally do it in the tub so they can wash away the worst smell on earth right away. I say that with a smile after years and years of having that ghastly stink on me from dogs.

I hope your job outlook perks up and your dog gets some relief soon.
Let me know how it goes.
