Question
I have a Saint Bernard/Collie boy puppy that is about 5 to 6 months old. My dad said that he should have dropped his balls 2 months ago, So I am not sure if this is true and my dog is a boy/girl. What age do they normally drop them at?

Answer
Dear Cammy, since your dad is already talking to you about this, but sure to show him this email and ask him to show you how to tell if you have a male or a female.
Testicles (balls) descend into a sac (scrotum) that is behind the penis on the abdomen (belly) on the dog. Females have nothing on their abdomen, but if you lift up their tail, you will see the anus (where the stool comes out) and below it the vagina (where the urine, blood from menses (period or heat) and puppies come out.
If you do have a male dog and the testicles have not come down, you should not breed this dog. When he is neutered, the veterinarian will go into the abdomen, if needed, and remove the testicles from there.
