Question

Our Pit Mix
Hello,

I have a 6 year old Pit Mix who has steadily exhibited anxiety symptoms since the 1st few months we had him. He was adopted at our local Humane Society at 11 months old. His displays are methodical.

1st his ears go back almost flat on his head. 2nd, his eyes almost gloss over and he seems to not be able to really hear you. 3rd, he flees. He looks to escape whatever he is feeling. He will chew through a 2 inch solid wood door to do it! He will get in and out of the bath tub over 50 times as I am sitting there watching him. He will bite through a metal cage until he bleeds just to get out and stand there. Last he finds a place lays down and his entire body shakes uncontrollably.

It seemed like he only did this when a storm was moving in. Once winter came, he was ok. So we naturally blamed it on the storm for the last 2 years or so. I treated him with "Calm" from our natural store, and it did seem to help. Problem is, it last only 4 hours, and you are not always home when a storm hits.

In the last few months, our dogs has declined. He literally wakes up, and within 10 minutes goes into his "zone" He stays in his anxiety ridden place almost all day. There is no storm, no thunder, no anything changing from day to day. Whatever it is, we do not see a trigger in any way.

I have researched Fluoxetine and think this may help him. We love our dog and do not want to put him down. But his quality of life is extremely poor right now and we are hoping to find a solution!

We have another rescued full bred Pit, so our dogs are always with someone ... they love eachother too ...even want to sleep in the same crate together! She is absolutely fine, thank goodness.

Thank you for any advice you can offer!

Answer
Have your pet examined by a vet; it is not always necessary to have an animal put to sleep because he has periods of anxiety.  A veterinarian can determine what meds to give your pet - that is not a decision to make on your own.
