Question
Hello I am hoping you can help me, I am kinda desperate. I have a minpin that is 8mths old (about 11lbs)and he is allergic to bee stings. He was stung on a few occasions when he was 3 & 4mths old and all was fine. Then all of a sudden at about 6mths he got stung and his whole head, neck, etc swelled up huge and with in 15 min (the time it took to get to the vet) he was having a hard time breathing. We rushed him to the vet for an injection. Well today he was stung again. His nose and face swollen up. I gave him an antihistamine (on vets orders) and stayed with him all day. Well about 7 hours after the pill he is now getting hives all over his body and is stressed. (I will take him to the vet as soon as he answers my call, good luck). Here is my big problem, I am living in Guatemala right now and Vet service is not the best. I need advice on what I can do in an emergency or medicine to have on hand so that I can deal with this. There is not always vet service available and I need to have my own solution in these times. I have benadryl on me always. (I think the dose is about 1mg per lb?) I do not know if there is such a thing as an epi pen for dogs?? I myself have one but I know it is waaaay too much medicine for my dog. Any advice you can give me would be so much appreciated. Thank you so very much!

Answer
Hi!

The best thing you can do is give him antihistaminics. Other kind of drugs should not be used without veterinary supervision, it may be very dangerous. You can learn the appropriate dosage of the kind of antihistaminic drug he advises from your vet. The other kind of drugs which are injections will need to be done by a veterinarian. You may ask your vet to teach you what and how to administer the appropriate dosage in case of an emergency.
