RABIES VACCINE REACTION

18 14:55:30

Question
Today is Wed and last Saturday my dog had his 3 yr rabies vaccine. All Saturday he was extreemly tired, and started licking at the air, for 30minutes on end. The vet said give him a day or two.
Sunday he didn't get up at all. I brought him outside and he just circled for literally 5 minutes trying to poo. Finally he passed liquid stool.
Monday He started moaning. Ever since the shot he moans when I pick him up, and is limping on his back leg. I brought him into the vet again, and they did an examine and sent him home.
But by yesterday morning he was worse. Vomitting, shaking; back to the vet again. They admitted him, and did bloodwork. He was given an injection to help the nausea, and started on an antibiotic pill. Once again he was sent home.
Well now it is day 5 and he is STILL sleeping, except to suddenly wake up and vomit.

My dog is 5years old and has NEVER been ill. He was in excellent health until the vaccine. I am terrified he will not get better but only worse. What can I do? The vet is saying just wait, give him time. But my dog is very sick, and his personality is even different. He seems paranoid, and this licking at the air is just crazy.

Help!

Answer
Time is one of the things that will help this dog. He most likely won't get any worse, just a little better everyday. What other drugs did he send home with him?

Since I have no idea what type or brand of rabies vaccine he used I cannot tell you what kind of reactions he might have. It is a rare thing to see any kind of reaction let alone one this bad.

You can call the vet and get the information of the manufacturer and contact them about these reactions. They might even pay for the medical treatment of your dog. (might is the key word here).
But in any case they need to know about this reaction and what you can do for it.

I am sure your vet has treated these before and is on the right course of treatment. I know it's hard to see your dog not feeling well but give him a day or so. Air licking is usually from nausea as the vet said but sometimes it is from a disturbance in the brain. However that wouldn't be the case here. It is usually the result of head trauma.

He will sleep a lot while he is recovering. That is normal and healthy for him.
Ask the vet if you can give him something at home for the nausea also, such as pepto bismol or zantac.

Most of all, keep in contact with them and ask for the rabies vaccine maker. You will need the batch number and serial number of that bottle also. Then contact the manufacturer.

That is about all I can add to what your vet is already doing. I hope he recovers soon.
Let me know how he does and what you find out about the vaccine.
