Rabies shot reaction

Question
Our pug got her 3yr rabies shot recently and had a very severe reaction.  From the time we first noticed a slight swelling to when we got her to the vets (about 15 minutes) her face was so swollen that she couldn't open her eyes and she was beginning to have trouble breathing and the rest of her body was beginning to swell.  She ended up having to have an IV and be kept under observation for 5 hours.

My question is what will happen the next time she needs the shot?  I know some people recommend not getting the shot if a dog has a severe reaction, but she needs it to be licensed and we live in an area with a high raccoon population.  Will the vet use a different vaccine blend?  Will they counter-medicate against reaction?  Will they give her the shot and keep her for observation?  I know we have a long time before we have to worry about it, but it was a really scary experience and I would feel better if I knew what to expect the next time.

Answer
Did she get any other vaccinations with it? There are many things you can do. You can give her Benadryl an hour before her vaccinations, you can ask the vet to use a different brand and different virus, such as live vs killed.

Basically they have a reaction to the other ingredients in the vaccine, not usually the rabies vaccine itself.
