Question
Is it possible that a dogs gums may get red from either a vitamin definciency or possiblly a virus or other type of infection. is there any particular dog food that would be good for helping to keep the gums healthy?

Answer
Hi Brabara! The most common reason for red gums in a dog is gingivitis. The best way to treat this is to have the teeth cleaned, especially the part of the tooth below the gum line that you cannot see. There are many good antibiotics that can keep this bacterial infection down. There is a food called T/D that helps brush the dog's teeth as it eats. You should also have rawhide chews available as this gives constant abrasion to the teeth as they work on them and helps keep the gums healthy. Veterinarians have these chews with medicines in them to help keep the mouth fresh smelling.

Hope this helps!Nicole.D.
