Question
I have a one year old Maine coon cat who is chewing on my furniture.  Mostly corners of baseboards, chairs and tables.  I have applied bitter apple to past areas and given chew sticks.  What else can I do to stop this naughty behavior???

Answer
Cats detest anything citrus. There are many sprays that work for cats, but bitter apple isn't one of them. I used to use a squirt bottle of water on my cats and it stopped them for life.

Problem is you have to be there each time they do it to stop the action while it's happening.

There could be an underlying cause to this so a good exam is in order if the deterrents don't work. Pica, as it's called at times, is the unnatural drive to chew or eat paint, wood, dirt, lick walls, etc. and can have some hidden causes.

That is why a thorough exam should be first on the list. During the exam the vet can tell you other effective ways to stop this if there is nothing physically wrong.

But that should be the first item on the list.
