Question
I have a long hair cat and he is getting matted hair balls on his butt and under his front legs, we tried cutting them out gently, but unfortunately he does not hold still for two long. We've have had this cat 7 years and this is the first time. We thought of using a comb instead of a brush Please help....
Thank you for your time and help. Have a great day.

Answer
Hi Sarah!  A lot of times matting is caused by a kitty not cleaning themselves.  The number one reason for this in an older kitty, would be because of abcessed or decaying teeth.  Their mouths are sore and they begin to stop grooming themselves.  I would recommend having your veterinarian check his teeth, as a dental cleaning will be needed.  Abcessed and decaying teeth can cause kidney problems if not treated.
As for his hair now.  Clippers work best to get the matting out.  If you are unable to do this, there are alot of groomers who will groom cats with this problem for about $30.  I would definately recommend that, if it is too difficult to do at home.
I hope this is helpful!
