Question
I have 2 shar pei (one of each sex). I have noticed an odd smell the past
couple of days, almost a sweet smell. Yesterday, my female dog Scooby,
couldn't stop herself from sniffing and licking my neutered males butt.
That's when I discovered that it was the source! No abnormal eatting,
drinking, or bowel movements. What's the deal? Should I be worried?  

Answer
Dogs have scent glands in their rectum (anal sacs/glands); however, they usually produce a fishy smell when released or expressed.  Excretions are normal, but excessive licking or scooting could indicate an impaction.

Make sure to check their ears and between their feet for odor as these dogs are VERY prone to skin and ear infections.
