Ticks

Question
A dog showed up at my house a week ago.  He was thin, hungry and thirsty.  You could see his ribs and vertebrae.  I fed him, wormed him and applied Advantage II.  He has ear infections in both ears which I took him to the vet for and they prescribed EasOtic.  The dog also has ticks far down in his ear canal, covering his body, especially around where his collar was.  The vet wasn't overly enthusiastic about helping me remove the ticks and said the Advantage will take care of it.  So far I have removed over 200 deer ticks, dog ticks and some tiny variety I have never seen before.  I have never seen so many ticks on one dog.  I considered putting another application of Advantage II on him, but I'm not sure if that is healthy.  I'm not trying to be such a "girl" but it's really grossing me out.  How do I get these ticks off him except for picking them off one at a time?  The vet said that he was probably around 2 years old and is a wolf probably husky mix.

Answer
There is a new product called Certifect that is probably the best thing for ticks.  It has something in it called Amitraz that makes the ticks move around the skin more.  By moving through the hairs, they get more of the insecticide on their bodies, so they die faster.

For ticks in the ears, I recommend a drop of Frontline or Certifect in the ears one time.  That will make the ticks remove their mouthparts from the skin and it makes it easier to remove them.
