German shepherd puppy-- age to be taken around other dogs??

Question
Hi, I am picking up my german shepherd puppy (which is about 9-10 weeks old) on friday-- I have been researching constantly about this puppy and what to do/not to do. I am SO worried to take him around the other dogs on our property at his young age-- I just want to take all the proper precautions to avoid a possibility of him getting sick from being around other dogs he is NOT used to. Can i take him around these other dogs to start socializing? Is 9-10 weeks old too young to be around other dogs? I would of course be right there with him, I just am worried that he could get sick from these other dogs--I know how sensitive puppies can be to other animals. He HAS had his first set of shots.....help please! :-)

Answer
A 9-10 week old puppy should have had Two sets of shots by now. One at 6 weeks, one at 9 weeks. He should have two more also, at 12 and 16 weeks.
Since he has only had one set I would not take him to a social area such as a dog park until he has had another set of vaccinations and a bordetella vaccine for kennel cough. I get a lot of questions about dogs that have picked this up at dog parks.

Make sure he is on monthly heartworm medicine and is being wormed additionally for round, whip and hookworms.
He does need to be socialized soon- very soon- but do so with caution for the above reasons. A good puppy class is usually best for this since these dogs are not allowed in unless vaccinated.
He needs the training and there are classes out there just for socializing your dog.
Look in the local paper or phone book for a kennel club and call them.
