Swollen paw

Question
My Llasa about 2 days ago started to limp a little.  The next day she would hardly walk on it.  I tried soaking it twice a day, which she seemed to love.  It is swollen, and I noticed a little mark on the top of her paw, I was thinking she may have been stung or bitten by something.  I'm afraid it might get infected, but she has not lost her appetite and drinks plenty of water.  It has been like this now for 2 days.  Should I continue to try soaking it and could I put something in the water that may help? Do you think she should be on an antibiotic?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Linda!  From what you have told me, it sounds as though your little girl may have an abcess on her foot. This is when a bite, sting or small wound becomes infected and causes the surrounding area to swell with infection.  It is hard to assume that this is the cause without seeing her, but from her symptoms, this would definately sound like a good possibility that this is what is going on!  I would recommend a vet visit, as if this is an abcess, antibiotics will be needed.  The antibiotics (usually Clavamox, twice per day for 7 days) will clear this up no problem!
I have a shih tzu...so your little girl and my little boy are cousins! I just love llasa's and shih tzus...they are so sweet!
Please give that little girl tons of get well kisses for me and let me know how she does!
