Question
Hi my name is Adrienne and I recently moved to CA after my boyfriend and I lost our jobs and our home up in Portland OR. We moved in with a friend in Los Osos who is letting us get on our feet here. Unfortunately he is not an attentive pet owner and we've come to find out that his dog and cat have fleas and worms and now so do our 2 cats. We don't have any money yet as we haven't found jobs yet but what I do have around the house is garlic (fresh and powdered) rolling tobacco that is free from any additives and chemicals. I've heard from some holistic vets as well as hippy friends who have used both to deworm their animals. I've found a renowned Vet Dr Sarah Little who condones this type of treatment. I've also found a vet ran website that told me to dump garlic powder all over their food stating that they'll love the flavor and it will not harm them at all. While another vet on another website stated that garlic is toxic to cats and can kill them. I just need to know what dosage I should use of either. I really do wish I could afford dewormer and flea meds but I don't even have money to feed myself, luckily I do have a large bag of cat food that will get them through this rough time. Thanks for your help, time and opinion on this matter.

Answer
HI Adrienne
Animals who are healthy, eat well and have healthy immune systems do not get worms and fleas.  All pets should be on a raw and natural diet.  Commercial dried or tinned foods are not really food and do not help keep our pets healthy.
There are many great herbal products available (which you can see from our website:  www.roxysworld.com.au).  If you are not able to spend money then you need to look at foods that may help.  Whether you give garlic or not to your cats is your choice.  I can not advise.  What I can tell you is that Cheryl Schwartz who is an holistic vet states that adding 1 - 2 cloves of garlic to each pets (cat or dogs) daily meals will help to repel fleas and deworm them.  Adding raw finely chopped cabbage is also beneficial as is adding 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of Pumpkin seeds every second day for a 3 week period.  Mix pumpkin seeds into food.  Make sure the seeds are not salted.
Your friend will need to look at some natural ways to get the fleas out of his house as well.
I hope this helps,
Silva.
