Relocating our senior pom from India to California

Question
We would like to move our American Spitz, 16 yrs of age, to US from India. He keeps good health but has problems in his hind legs due to his old age. Kindly let us know the process and medical fitness requirement for the dog to fly.

Answer
Hi Abhi,

Thank you for your inquiry.  This is a good question, and really it all depends on what you and your vet feel your Spitz is physically capable of enduring. While the flight can be very long to India, if you take care to work with a professional pet relocation company, you can ensure that your dog is flown on a pet-friendly airline that will make sure he is well-hydrated and taken care of during the flight.  Additionally, you will want to make sure that the travel crate is large enough so he can comfortably stretch out while traveling.
Ultimately, your veterinarian will be the one responsible for signing a health certificate deeming your dog healthy enough to travel internationally.  I would suggest having a discussion with your vet ahead of time as to whether s/he would feel comfortable doing this and ways to help your dog if he does end up flying, perhaps with joint supplements or additional therapy.
