-----Question-----
I have a 10 gallon tank with 7 female bettta. Since I have had the tank my fish keep dying on me. I lost 3 mollies, 3 platies and 2 betta(all lived in the tank at different times.)One of my 7 remaining betta has no also taken sick, well at least i think she is sick. I was staying at the bottom and coming up for food, but only ate a little. I kept her in a small tank to herself for a week and she started to swim about more so today when i cleaned my tank i put her back in and u stayed near the bottom. When she would swim to the top she would float on her side and then curl into a ball and float to the bottom. she then lays on the bottom or what ever she falls on. I thought she was just tired but then i noticed she was breathing rather hard so i took her out of the big tank. Yet when I or an other better nudge her she swims right off fast then floats to the bottom again. I added some medicen to the water but its only only for heal and add shin to their scales, also heal tail rot. It is having no effect on her. She is also smaller then my other betta who are growing right up to normal size. I thought she was jsut smaller. Can you please help me, i've done all I can think of.

Hi Laura,
It seems as though your betta may have swimbladder disease.
Swimbladder disease has may causes such as a virus, a bacterium or the diet. Feeding too many dry foods which will expand in their abdomen will cause them swimbladder problems. Try to feed them frozen shelled peas. This will help their digestion and help them to recover.

Good luck!
Chloe.

Chloe,

I wish i could try it but she died last night and 2 more since then. i have now lost 5 betta, 3 mollies and 3 platies. My fish keep dying on me and no matter how much i clean the tank with warm water and their little toys too they still get sick so fast and die on me. Now my algea eaters are acting up. I really don't know what to do. Can you please give me some more ideas as to what to do!!!! Thank you so much!!!

Answer
Hi Laura,
There are a few other things to be considered as to what is causing your fish to die. Firstly, you must make sure your tank is cycled. Secondly, you should add water dechlorinator to get rid of any metal compounds in tapwater that is toxic to fish. Thirdly, make sure you do partial water changes so you will not kill any beneficial bacteria. Hopefully, these suggestions will help you find out why your fish keep dying.

Best of luck
Chloe.
