Question
I have a needlenose fish and he stays pretty calm and at the top of the tank but I noticed when i wipe the outside of the tank down he goes CRAZY he starts trying to jump and swimming fast and looks like he's trying to run into my hand, i'm not sure if it amuses him or scares him and was wondering if anyone knew.
After i stop with then wiping he calms back down and goes back to normal.
What could this mean?

Answer
Hi Crystal,
Your Needlenose's reaction is quite common among those types of fish whom are considered "jumpy" or skittish. It's more of a frightened reaction more than anything, and you have to be careful that he doesn't bash him nose into the sides of the tank. A bent-nosed Needlenose wouldn't be impossible. Just be careful. Try to be slow with wiping and make it fast so he doesn't get too excited. I've seen this happen with even little fish like Golden Wonder killifish, these fish are quite similar to the needlenose in their behavior and habits.

But otherwise, this is normal and its just an excited/fright reaction.
Best wishes,
Karen~
