White fungus on catfish

Question
Hi Karen,

We had no problems until we bought some new fish for our tank. Then the fish developed white spot which we countered. However we noticed that the upside down catfish has developed a white fungus, especially around the eyes and head. It's also on some of the fins and in smaller amounts on the body.

Do you know what this could be, and how to remove it?

Answer
Hi Jason,
I'm sorry to hear about that...

Your upside-down catfish should get treatment as soon as possible. Most fungus medications work well. I've used Jungle's Fungus clear with really good results before. But whatever you use -- make sure it is safe for catfish.

* Ich Guard II
* Ich-Attack

Are two medications claimed to be safe with catfish. Start treatment as soon as possible, do a 50% water change before treatment and continue doing daily 50% water changes which not only helps reduce stress on the fish, but it eliminates the excess fungal spores going around. Just redose the tank with the medication after the water change.

Follow the directions on the package of the fungus treatment. If you catch it early enough and keep up with the water changes, fungus is usually easy to treat - unless you run into a stubborn case - but usually this is rare.

Best of luck and I hope this helps!
Karen~
