Question
First.....I currently have 4 tanks. With one of my tanks, I housed a few assorted Organdas but have not replenished as they have died, as I am hoping to change to Angelfish for that certain tank. So, what I am wondering is if I can put the one black and organge goldfish that is left in that tank, in another tank of mine that houses guppies and tetras?

2nd question.....I have an Oscar...he is about a year old and a while ago he developed HITH which I treated as per my local petstore directions. Since then, (It did seem to clear up then) it has come back. I am currently treating him with "Melafix"and have done some water changes and my levels seem ok so are there any other suggestions? He is getting to looking pretty scarred up and I feel real bad for him.

Answer
Hi Tina,
It's really not the best thing to keep goldfish with tropicals like tetras and guppies unfortunately. Goldfish can't compete well with tropicals and the temperature preferences of course are different. However, that doesn't mean it absolutely cannot be done. You could always try it if you must. Try to keep the temperature around 76F or so. And make sure the goldfish is getting his fair share of specific goldfish food and don't forget the importance of vegetables and vegetable-based foods that goldies need to thrive.

Here is the best article I have found yet about HITH-

My experiences is improving the water conditions and diet of the fish is just as important if not more important than treating with a medication. What I did for my big oscar who had HITH years ago was, change half or more of his water everyday to help keep his immune system up. Feed him high quality cichlid pellets (omega one brand) soaked in liquid vitamins (people vitamins) until they are somewhat soft. Plus I'd try to incorporate as much variety as I could. No feeder fish whatsoever. But crickets (you can feed either live or canned) as well as frozen or freeze dried (make sure to reconstitute before feeding) shrimp and krill and worms like earthworms and mealworms. Plenty of vitamin rich food is always very important. Besides making sure he had the best food and cleanest water I could possibly manage, I treated for about 2 months with Metronidazole. I don't particularly recommend using medication because I do feel that HITH can be treated and reversed with good care and a better diet. It's better if you catch as early as you can as well. Oscars are very prone to this condition probably because of their large size, nutrition demands, and waste production. All you can do is try your best....

Best wishes and I hope this helps!
Karen~
