water storage

Question
Is it safe to store water for partial water changes in a wastebasket or trash can? I was wondering about the plastic they are made of. Because of rust, ammonia, and nitrates in our well water, I've been filtering water first in a 5 gal. bucket with amquel and a small box filter. This works great but isn't enough water for the size of tank I would like to get.
Thank you for your opinion.

Answer
Hi Suz:  I almost always have a five gallon plastic bucket ( i got it at homedepot) that I keep filled with water... the cats drink out of it...and I have never had an issue with using it...but I don't store it for more then a week two at tops... Do not store water in metal though....  dave
