Koi Losing Fins

Question
My Daughter gave me a Koi for Father'sday, it was too small to be in my pond, it was sucked into the skimmer. When I found it I placed it into an isolation tank. The Koi was nearly dead, it has come back, but has lost most of it's fins. Will it grow new fins, and what is the future for a fin less fish? I do not have the heart to kill it.

Answer
Hi Daniel
I don't blame you for not wanting to euthanize it, especially if it's making a "comeback".  I always try to give the fish a chance before throwing in the towel. Not sure how long it's been, but from what you've said, sounds like he's got a pretty decent shot at surviving.

Fins will grow back.  If the damage was pretty serious though, they may not grow back to the extent of what they were.  Just keep it in the tank by itself, and be sure to keep the water quality really good to help prevent bacterial infections and fungus problems.  Probably wouldn't hurt to pick up both some MelaFix and PimaFix.  They're both antibacterial herbal remedies, MelaFix is supposed to be good for injuries to fins from fighting and such, I believe it claims to help regrow fins-though I can't say for sure on the truth to that.  PimaFix also helps with minor antibacterial problems and also with fungal problems.  They're both safe to use together as well as with other meds, and won't throw off the water quality.  If you're in the US, Walmart carries the MelaFix, but you'll need to go to a petstore for the PimaFix.

Good luck!
