How Do U Clean A Used Fish Tank?

Question
Hi Chris, How do you clean a used fish tank so it's safe for fish? This is my 1st used tank and I have no clue on how to clean it. I do have several new tanks going (freshwater), but I'm scared to use cleaners on this used tank. Would Simple Green be safe to use? Thanks!! -Debi

Answer
Hi Debi;

It is best not to use any soaps, cleaners or detergents on any part of your tank or it's equipment. Many people have done it anyway and haven't had any problems, but better to be safe than sorry!

The only things you really need to clean a used tank are white vinegar, baking soda and water. Make a paste of baking soda and a little water. Scrub the tank all over inside and out with that using a very clean rag or a handful of clean paper towels. Rinse well.

If you find any white mineral deposits that you can't get off with the baking soda, use straight vinegar on them. Soak a paper towel with the vinegar and stick it to the mineral deposits and let it soak there for an hour or so. Wipe it clean and rinse again.

Both the vinegar and baking soda can be used on the equipment as well. Filter parts, rocks, decorations, lid, and anything else that is okay to be submerged in water. If there are any leftover filter pads or other filter media just throw that kind of stuff away. You never know what it has been exposed to and may have absorbed.

Have fun!
