Question
QUESTION: I have a 30 gallon tank that has been set up for over a year. I have guppies, neon tetras, mickey mouse platy's, cherry barbs. I have one young female guppy that constantly rubs her belly on a particular spot of one ornament in the tank. When she does this, she chases any other fish that comes near away. She eats and doesn't seem to be sick. Can you tell me why she does this. She is not pregnant that I can tell. I have a number of pregnant guppies.

ANSWER: Hi Wendy,

No one is really sure why fish do this.  It could be several things including parasites, or something as simple as an "itch".  As long as the fish in the tank are acting normal, appear healthy and are eating I wouldn't worry about it.

Answer
Wendy,

What you are seeing is called flashing.  There are many reasons and without more information it is impossible to tell you exactly why your fish is doing it.

The most common reasons are skin irritation caused by poor water quality or external parasites.

If you haen't already done so you should have your water tested for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH, hardness and O2.  This will let you know if water quality is the problem.
