Question
Hi David, it's me again...the one with the nitrite issue in the 37 gallon.  I'm cleaning it out today but had a different question.  Got up this morning and my very pregnant gold mickey mouse platy has a bloody gash on the side of her body like she ran into to something or something attached her.  She is normally the dominant fish in this tank (all I have in there is platys and coreys).  She doesn't act like she is suffering...ate normally and acts normal.  What do you think happened and how can I help her wound heal?

Answer
hi Carol:  is there something sharp in the tank... like a piece of coral or perhaps a broken decoration?  It is possible that one of the cory cats may have gashed her but I doubt that...

What I would do normally is add some malafix to the water... but since she is very pregnant I would just maybe increase the water temp a bit and add aquarium salt.  Make sure she is getting good food... maybe some live brine shrimp, etc.... you want to keep her nutrition at maximum so that her wound heals... and keep in mind that since she is pregnant she is already stressed a bit... poor nutrition and stress leads to disease especially when there is already an injury.... keep me posted... dave
