Question
Hi Matt
I've had a medium fish tank for about 7 months and i'm still equipping it, 3 weeks ago i bought some weed and a week later i realisd that two snails had arrived with the weed. only yesterday i found around 9 small clusters of eggs on my weed. I own two guppies, two platys, and a 4 cm catfish. the problem is that i don't know whether the eggs are my catfish's or my snails'.  I've tried to research but they both look too similar. they are small clear clusters with tiny white dots, no more than 1/4 millimeter all clusters have about 14-16 eggs,
also what should i do with them if they are snails, my snails are pouch snails.
thanks
Georgia

Answer
Hi Kaitie,
Are the eggs in a jelly like substance?  Chances are it's the snails.  Snails love to lay eggs in jelly-like clusters under leaves, on leaves, on glass, or anywhere possible.  The catfish, being only 4cm, I dont believe she is old enough and fertile yet to lay eggs.  I have never heard of pouch snails, I researched them and they look like pond snails, if they are pond snails, then they will breed extremely fast and will take over your tank.  Some people love snails and believe they are beneficial to the tank, which they are, as they break down leftover food in the tank decayed leaves and etc.  But, some think it is unsightly.  You must decide now if you want snails or not because once the eggs hatch, you will never be able to get rid of them unless you scrub down your tank and bleach decorations and plants with part bleach part water.  In one of my tanks, I had 2 pond snails, but I was unsure if I wanted them or not, but by the time I decided, it was too late.  Now, I remove 4-6 snails a day, and it never stops.  One of my local friend's has so much that it looks like the gravel is moving because he has dark gravel which the snails blend in.
